The current heatwave is not expected to break any daily record highs, but on Thursday the Met Office announced that there will be eight days in 2026 where the temperature will reach or exceed 34C.
There were two in May’s heat wave, four in June and two so far, a record for the chronology better than 1976 and 2020. A further 34C plus is expected on Friday.

The hottest July temperature so far was 35.5C in Wesley, Surrey on Thursday.
Although temperatures will drop slightly through the weekend, many areas will still reach official heat wave limits over the next week.
People may be comparing it to 1976, when the UK saw 16 consecutive days above 30C, but that record is unlikely to be broken.
