Uganda’s military chief says he has ordered the closure of two of the country’s biggest media outlets.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba it said on Sunday that the Daily Monitor, the country’s largest independent newspaper, and NTV Uganda, one of the country’s largest private broadcasters, were being closed and would not reopen without its approval.
“In Uganda, I don’t believe there is a free press!” Kainerugaba, who is the president’s son, wrote on X.
“From now on, all bad news about Uganda must be dealt with by my office!” He said in one of several posts, adding that all media in Uganda will follow the law, moving forward.
The army has been sent
Both Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda are owned by the Nation Media Group (NMG) conglomerate. The Daily Monitor reports that security forces are outside the headquarters of NMG Uganda in Namuwongo, Kampala and where the Serena Hotel is located, and staff say “no one is allowed to enter or leave.”
NTV Uganda, Spark TV and other NMG TV and radio stations went down in the country on Sunday, Reuters news agency reported.
According to Kainerugaba, he has the power to shut down any media since 2017, while his father, President Yoweri MuseveniHe gave him this skill.
Kainerugaba is seen as a possible successor to his father, who has ruled Uganda since 1986 and is known for his controversial writings.
His government shut down the Daily Monitor for 10 days in 2013, and in 2007, NTV Uganda was shut down a few months after its launch, following government criticism of its broadcasting.
The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF), the Police Force and the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) are yet to issue a statement on the project.
The National Association of Broadcasters in Uganda said it was monitoring the situation, and said it was “deeply concerned about what is happening and how it will affect the media culture” and the rights contained in the law.
