On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced his administration’s latest attempt to support the US coal industry during a press conference an irreplaceable media event which was accidentally torn between the energy crisis and Trump’s maintenance and construction and restoration of monuments in DC. The dynamic part of the experience often did not correspond to reality.
“Today we are taking historic action to lower the cost of energy and the cost of living for all Americans with clean, beautiful coal power,” Trump said, apparently unaware that coal is one of the most expensive forms of electricity generation in the US.
As wind and solar power become cheaper, coal has become the second cheapest option for generating electricity, compared to the cost of building new nuclear reactors. As a result, no new coal-fired power plants have been completed in more than 10 years, and coal has gone from half of the country’s electricity generation to about 15 percent of the nation’s electricity. That’s before the indirect costs of using coal. They emit more greenhouse gases for every unit of energy, release harmful particles and chemicals into the atmosphere, and leave behind ash that is rich in toxic metals.
That’s true, but the White House apparently doesn’t live there. “When you look at the real big failures, the states, they’re usually wind,” he said. It just keeps getting bigger, bigger, bigger, and bigger, and it puts you out of business. Very expensive. More expensive power is available.
