Barcelona are keeping a close eye on Tottenham Hotspur’s Argentine defender Coty Romero, 28, after reports the London club are keen to sell him this summer amid possible competition from Atletico Madrid.
Italian transfer journalists Gianluigi Longari and Fabrizio Romano have reported that Tottenham are planning to leave the Argentine defender, stressing the player’s clear desire to join the Spanish league side as he wants his next professional move to be in La Liga.
Romero, who is under contract with Spurs until 2029, is regarded as one of the most popular defenders in European football in recent years, making him an ideal target for the two Spanish clubs looking to strengthen their defensive line.
In order to complete the deal, according to the Spanish “Mundo Deportvo”, two main conditions must be met: first, the English club is ready to give up the player tied to a long-term contract, and second, the player is ready to join the Spanish league.
As for the first point, the situation in London shows that the departure of the Argentine is unlikely. Romero’s relationship with the Tottenham management has suffered from a noticeable strain, and the team’s absence from European competition next season makes the centre-back’s continued presence less attractive.
Furthermore, Romero is considered one of the most promising names in the dressing room along with a number of other players in the team, making any negotiations with him a sensitive topic for the English club, both from a sporting and financial point of view.
As for the second point, all indications are that the player himself is convinced that his career in England is coming to an end and that his priority is to continue his career in the Spanish league, opening the door for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid to complete the deal.
Romero’s characteristics fully correspond to what the two Spanish clubs are looking for. a classy centre-back with strong competitive experience, leadership skills on and off the pitch and a ferocious defensive spirit that other players in his position rarely possess on the current market.
The most important question remains the financial value of the deal, especially in light of the dire economic situation Barcelona are suffering from, which could give Atletico Madrid an advantage in negotiations.
