England manager Thomas Tuchel has spoken of the message he gave his players after half-time against Croatia that helped turn the tide and lead the Three Lions to a thrilling 4-2 victory to kick off the 2026 World Cup.

When asked about the content of his speech to the players, Tuchel said: “I told them that even if we lose the game, my opinion will not change about the work we have done in the last seventeen days, but we have to play our way.”

Criticism of the first half and praise for the response

The German coach admitted that his team’s performance before the break was not convincing, explaining: “We had some tension, we made too safe decisions, and instead of going forward, we tended to go backwards. We struggled to find the right rhythm and didn’t have enough confidence to use the spaces.”

He continued. “I saw stats that showed we only won 33% of ground balls in the first half compared to 73% in the second half. Even without the ball we weren’t at the level of commitment and enthusiasm we needed.

He added: “I really liked the reaction of the players after the break, the match was full of emotion and it took us a while to get into the atmosphere properly.”

Bellingham. We didn’t need to shout

Jude Bellingham gave England the best possible start to the second half when he scored the third goal just two minutes after the restart to put his side on course for victory.

Referring to Tuchel’s speech at the break, the “Real Madrid” star said: “It wasn’t about yelling in the dressing room or creating a dramatic situation, it was just what the team needed.”

He added: “We have a mature group that includes senior leaders and everyone knew the level we needed to reach. A strong start to the second half gave us the ideal platform to take control of the match and get the win.”
