The Three Lions dropped significantly after Gordon’s goal
The players of the English team were shocked by the tactical decisions of the German coach Thomas Tuchel, after taking the lead over Argentina in the semi-finals of the World Cup (1-0), reports the English press.
After Anthony Gordon’s 55th-minute goal put England 1–0 up, Tuchel opted to switch to a five-man defence, with Gordon withdrawing him and bringing on defender Ezri Konsai in the 72nd minute, then bolstering the defense by introducing Dan Byrne and Nico O’Reilly.
What happened when Argentina faced Spain in the World Cup?
Amazing number.. How much possession did Argentina have in the second half against England?
These defensive changes forced England to retreat completely, losing control of the match.
After Gordon’s goal, England’s possession did not exceed 12% and they succumbed to repeated Argentine attacks before the latter scored twice in time (Enzo Fernandez and then Lautaro Martinez) to book their place in the final.
According to sources in the English camp, the newspaper said “Daily Telegraph” The Briton said the players were “surprised” and “dissatisfied” in the early stages of the defence, especially as the team were in a strong position and could have kept the pressure on instead of retreating.
Tuchel, on the other hand, defended his decisions after the game, saying he had “no regrets”, explaining that he switched to a 5-man defense to close down spaces and counter Argentina’s many crosses.
But many players and pundits felt that the decision was very negative and directly contributed to the loss of the game, and that England had “handed the initiative” to Argentina after it had been in control.
