A homicide investigation has been launched after a man’s remains were found in a stone circle in the Peak District following the winter months.
Officers were called to reports of a body at the Nine Ladies Stone Club in Stanton Lees, near Darley Dale, at around 13:40 BST on Monday.
Derbyshire Police said emergency services attended the scene and a 26-year-old man was pronounced dead.
Det Insp Tony Owen, who is leading the investigation, said: “We know there were many people in the area celebrating the winter holidays over the weekend and we know this incident will be shocking and distressing for those who were there and for the wider community.
The man’s identity has not been officially released, but police say his family is aware and they are being supported by specialist officers.
The 4,000-year-old stone circle is said to represent nine women, and the King Stone is said to be the fossilized remains that played for them.
The monument is the focus of the summer holiday celebrations to mark the longest day of the year, which took place on June 21 this year.
Owen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.
He said: “We know people were coming and going from the area over the weekend, so it’s important that anyone who was in any area over the weekend contact officers.
“However, we know this is of concern to people, and we know there will be an increased police presence in the area over the coming days so I would urge anyone with concerns to contact an officer.”
Derby Mountain Rescue Team assisted East Midlands Ambulance Service at the scene and said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s friends and family at this difficult time.”
