Event organizers in the US city of Seattle are sticking to the Pride Match celebration in solidarity with gay people as planned, despite objections from Egypt and Iran, who will meet next Saturday morning GMT as part of the 2026 World Cup.
Seattle is known for being one of the American cities that celebrates the gay community the most, while the June celebration is one of the most popular and largest Pride events in the United States.

Coach of Iran. We are treated unfairly at the World Cup… and the Egypt match will be no exception
Before the draw for the 2026 World Cup was held in December last year, the local organizing committee decided to include the match on June 26 in the “Pride Match” events. However, the results of the draw brought Egypt and Iran to this confrontation, which has sparked wide controversy, given the stances of both countries on homosexuality.
The Egyptian Football Association has called on its international partner, FIFA, not to organize any events related to “Pride”, considering that they contradict the cultural and religious values of the Egyptian society. The Iranian Federation also presented a similar official objection.
Despite these objections, organizers in Seattle confirm that the event will go ahead as planned. Hedda McLendon, a member of the local organizing committee of the World Cup in Seattle, said in a statement to the agency. Reuters:
“The World Cup will come and go in three weeks. Pride… took place over 50 years ago this week. That will happen this week and it will continue long after the World Cup is over.”
In turn, the representative of FIFA said that “Pride Match” is a private initiative of the host city and is not an event organized by FIFA.
