Just two weeks before the start of the 2026 World Cup, the Negrera name is back on the scene after Javier Enriquez Negrera, the former vice-president of Spain’s referees’ committee, sparked widespread controversy with a satirical video about Spanish refereeing that quickly went viral on social media.
A lackluster performance by the Spaniards
FIFA was limited to appointing only two Spanish referees at the World Cup, Alejandro Hernández Hernández as on-field referee and Carlos del Cerro Grande as a member of the VAR staff, in what was considered the weakest representation of Spanish refereeing in recent years, reviving debate about the declining status of Spanish referees on the international stage.
A message that caused a storm
During the video, Javier Negrera appeared in a sarcastic tone, saying: “It’s time to get together. This is not about Barcelona or Real Madrid, but about Spain. And don’t worry about the referees, there won’t be any Spanish referees officiating our matches… Just kidding. Come on, Spain!”
Despite his attempt to pass off the comment as a joke, his statements sparked widespread outrage.
A large number of followers believed that Javier Negrera was the last person who had the right to joke about refereeing, given the association of his surname with the most famous incident in Spanish football in recent years.
Some of the comments were angry and harsh, notably “Your family has tarnished the reputation of a Spanish referee”, “It’s rude of you to talk about referees”, and “Your father’s case still haunts Spanish football”.
The controversy brings to the fore the high-profile Negrea case involving the payments companies linked to his father received from FC Barcelona, an issue that has so far cast a shadow over Spanish football.
