Moldovan Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu is set to step down from November, another surprise move that led to the resignation of the government.

“The moment I realized that I could no longer do my job according to principles and beliefs, I decided to resign,” Munteanu said in a televised statement on Friday.

“I will continue to serve my country from any position I may have,” he added.

Munteanu, 65, did not say much.

The move is a blow to President Maia Sandu and her ruling European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), which is in its second consecutive term.

Sandu said on Friday that Mr Munteanu will continue to work until a new Prime Minister is appointed “as soon as possible”. He said negotiations will begin next week before choosing a new candidate.

Munteanu was elected following parliamentary elections in September 2025 in which PAS defeated a Russian-leaning rival and won the mandate to continue Moldova’s European ⁠Union (EU) drive.

Before that, he worked outside of Moldova for 20 years, including at the World Bank.

Fall on the issue of corruption

President Sandu on Friday denied that Munteanu was banned from taking part in the government.

“To think that they wanted to fight violence but were not allowed to do so is false,” Sandu told a press conference.

“The Prime Minister had the right to run the government as he wanted,” he added, saying that he expected “participation” from Munteanu “in difficult decisions, and the presence of people to listen to people’s concerns and explain what we have to do and why it is important.”

The government has been reeling from the scandal involving the state-owned airline, MoldATSA.

There was talk of appointment and leadership. According to reports, the director of MoldATSA falsified his CV. In addition, the president’s cousin was directly appointed to work in public relations, and then received a salary increase that made his salary eight times higher than the average salary in Moldova.

A special committee of inquiry was formed on Thursday to examine the management of public sector companies.

The commission will also review recruitment processes for senior positions, management teams and cases where people simultaneously hold positions in several government agencies.

Moldova is a member of the EU. Located between Ukraine and EU member Romania, it has a large Romanian-speaking population and a small Russian-speaking population. Political power has been polarized for years between parties that support closer relations with Europe and those that want better relations with Moscow.
