The Open: ‘I never thought I’d live this far’ – David Howard’s inspiring trip to Royal Birkdale

On Thursday, Howard will start the tournament at 10:42 BST against New Zealand’s Kazuma Kobori and England’s Tom Sloman.

“It’s real. I’ve been busy playing for Munster Inter-Pros and playing for my home club Fota Island, I haven’t had much time to think but I’m happy to be here,” said Howard, who is ranked 1,441st in the world amateur rankings.

“I went to the Irish Open years ago to watch it, so it was my first time playing. I’ve watched quite a bit on TV over the years, so it will be a good test and a good week.

“I can’t stay. I’ll try my best to enjoy the week. But at the same time, I’m not here to fix the numbers. I want to do my best and see where it takes me.”

Regardless of what happens this week, Howard said his first open event will be worthwhile if it inspires other people with cystic fibrosis to pursue their dreams.

“A few people with CF children reach out to me,” he said.

“That’s why I’m doing all this for CF Ireland and as a lawyer, to show it’s not the end of the world.

“Keep pushing, keep fighting and you can follow your dreams.”
