The Open: England reaching the World Cup final could mean anything changes during Sunday’s final round

Transferring to the final round of a major championship is not unexpected, but usually to avoid incoming bad weather.

In 2019, Masters finale Departed at 07:30 local time to miss the thunderstorm. Tiger Woods famously took full advantage of his victory Fifth green jacket.

In May, the fourth round of the Cadillac Championship on the PGA Tour was moved up to prevent it from being affected by bad weather, but moving a major to avoid a potential conflict with another sporting event would be an unusual move.

Organisers, the R&A, say they aim to make a decision before the weekend.

“If there is going to be a change, we will communicate it within the next 48 hours,” Darbon said.

“Right now, we’re comfortable with our timing. If we’re going to make a change, it’s going to be a subtle change.

“A discussion with broadcasters is an important issue and so is crowd management on site and ensuring this is done in a safe and secure fashion.

“But we don’t expect any dramatic changes. We will keep it under review and finalize our position after the semi-finals.”

The Open uses a three-hole playoff with the total score determining the winner, followed by a sudden-death playoff if the players are still tied.

It’s been 11 years since golf’s oldest major was decided by a playoff, with Jack Johnson reigning at St. Andrews in 2015.
