Herbert looked poised to become the first player to shoot 61 in a major and only needed a par on the 18th to make history.
However, the final hole was statistically the toughest on the course in the second round and he pushed his tee shot to the right of the fairway – flirting out of bounds and eventually requiring a penalty-free drop after his ball was close to the fence separating the fairway from the spectators.
With a huge posse of reporters, broadcasters and cameras behind him, Herbert cut from the long, spry fescue with a short approach to the green and putted it down the hole on his third stroke.
After pulling his short shot to the left of the hole in history, Herbert crouched down in frustration before composing himself to tap.
The ending may have been incomplete, but it shouldn’t cloud what was a fantastic performance.
Asked if he had a chance to make history, Herbert, who plays on the LIV golf circuit and won his first tournament in May, said: “Nobody would have told me but I definitely knew.
“I did a great job of being present and not worrying about the record. I needed to care about what I was doing and I did a pretty good job of that.”
The lowest score at any major was recorded by South Korea’s Harron Ryu, who shot an 11-under-par 60 en route to winning the Evian Championship earlier this month.
