The Odyssey seems to be the blockbuster hit of the summer, and the opening of the international week of $264m, critical rave reviews included five stars from the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw, and fan reports across continents to face it Christopher NolanA giant tale of gods and beasts in one of only a dozen screens in the world capable of viewing Imax in 70mm. It also has the potential to dominate the box office in the coming weeks, with few other blockbusters set to be released this summer, except for Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which is why the cast is over. a shameful ritual about the press trip). Read on for spoilers filled with epic battles, story twists and more that bring Nolan’s vision of ancient life to life.
A great show

Technical wizardry

Mrs. Nolan
When Lupita Nyongo she was announced as Helen of Troy – the face that launched a thousand ships – fair commentators criticized the decision for trivial reasons. As their boat approaches their island, Odysseus ties himself to a tree so that he can hear their beautiful yet terrifying song as it reverberates in the ears of the audience, just as we, like Odysseus’ first Eurylochus (Himesh Patel), have our ears sealed with wax. The sound is “everything you want it to be, then everything you wish you didn’t,” says Odysseus, as Nolan forcefully leaves the audience’s imagination to write what’s empty.
Amazing cameos
Some of the most effective scenes of the film come from John Leguizamo, unrecognizable with white hair and a dirty smock in the role of Eumaeus, the swineherd who remains faithful to Odysseus until the end. As the Greek army leader Agamemnon, Benny Safdie strikes a terrifying presence with little wit against Nolan’s genre. Meanwhile, not all cameos were planned: pod ya dolphins who showed up unexpectedly on the day of the shoot completed the production of the film.
Yet perhaps the most surprising of all is the rapper’s singing Travis Scott as the bard narrator who opens the film with the account of Odysseus’ adventures in Troy. As he speaks, the man stomps his staff down in the tempo of dactylic hexameter (which, as any good scholar knows, is the original meter of Homer’s poetry). “I cast him because I wanted to admit that the story was presented as a spoken word poem, which is similar to rap,” said Nolan in an interview with. Oscar luck
It’s a good idea to start making accurate predictions about next year’s Oscars, since many films that look like winners won’t start showing until the fall film festivals. But Nolan is one of the Academy’s favorite directors, winning seven of the 13 Oppenheimer nominations in 2024 and three of the eight Dunkirk honors a few years ago. The Odyssey it seems like a lock for the nominees in the best picture, the best director and most of the technical teams, leaving the teams that play the game as winners.
There is no debate as to who is the leading man in this film, but there is everything to play in the supporting cast, and Holland and Robert Pattinson suitable to help the player and Zendaya, You guys and Theron are potential contenders in the supporting actress category — and Hathaway, if Universal decides not to direct her. Assessing the true cost of war
There is a good story that the best sequence of The Odyssey is the last 30 minutes, when Odysseus finally returns home with the help of Athena and enters his palace of Ithaca disguised as a beggar. After Penelope challenges the men to tie her bow – and Odysseus is the only one who can – she throws away her rags and reveals who she is.
His confrontation with the lovers is not a merciless killing Homer explained – it’s a good fight with both sides armed – but the suit, led by Pattinson’s slimy Antinous, is no match for the master of the house. His recapture of Ithaca is bittersweet, echoing the scene of the “fire of confusion and pain” that burned Troy when the Greeks captured the city. There is no glory in Nolan’s war, based on the ideas of Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. As Odysseus says: “We have broken the fragile bond between men.”
There may be a few true winners here, but Nolan’s cap in this case is more impressive than Homer’s. While the great poet ends The Odyssey with Odysseus preparing to “raid” to recover his lost treasure, Nolan envisions a bright and bleak future for Odysseus and Penelope. In a beautiful coastal setting, the reunited couple embark on a journey west to honor the lives of their fallen husbands when Telemachus – who would be anywhere between 16 and 22 at this point; Holland of course it doesn’t seem to know – lives in control of Ithaca.
