French channel M6 achieved exceptional audience success after broadcasting the quarter-final match of the 2026 World Cup, in which France defeated its counterpart Morocco (2-0), as more than 16 million viewers watched the game, despite its late start time of ten pm.
Official figures released by viewership measurement company Mediametric showed that the match had a viewing rate of 72.8%, meaning more than 7 in 10 French viewers watched the game, making it the channel’s highest viewing figure of the current World Cup.
The match beat the opening game against Senegal, which attracted 14 million viewers, and the round of 16 match against Paraguay, which averaged 12.2 million viewers despite kicking off at 11 p.m.
These numbers are expected to rise further when we add in the number of viewers via the encrypted BeIN Sports channel, which also broadcasts the matches, meaning the total number of followers for the match could exceed 16 million by a wide margin.
Despite the nearly 5,500 kilometers separating Gillette Stadium in the USA from France, French fans did not miss a single moment of the quarter-final match against the Atlas Lions in a scene that mirrored the rallying of fans around their national team.
Coach Didier Deschamps, proud of his side’s progress to the semi-finals, gave an indication of the extent of his country’s public enthusiasm, saying in his post-match press conference:
The French coach added. “We have a mission to this jersey, as well as to all the women, children, grandfathers and grandmothers who love the French national team and want it to win,” emphasizing that the team does not intend to stop there.
The semi-final against the winner of Spain-Belgium on Monday 14 July is expected to be a record-breaking viewing, especially since it will be broadcast at a more convenient time of 9pm Paris time, which could push viewers past the 20 million viewer barrier.
