After receiving widespread praise around the world for his brilliance with Cape Verde’s national team at the 2026 World Cup, goalkeeper Fusenia has received another honor as he has been named after a new species of seaweed discovered in the Caribbean by Spanish biologist Jesus Ortea.
The 40-year-old veteran goalkeeper’s real name is “Josimar Jose Evora Diaz”, but he chose the name “Fosinha” on his shirt in memory of his late grandmother.
Ortia named the object found “Aldisa Fosinha”, referring to the important role of the goalkeeper, and that the red color of the object symbolizes Fosinha’s achievement against Spain and his brilliance during the 0-0 draw in the first round of the 2026 World Cup, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation. (BBC).

Fossinha helped Cape Verde earn their first ever World Cup point as the team continued their journey to the round of 32, where they exited the tournament with a respectable 3-2 extra-time defeat to reigning champions Argentina.
Cape Verde is the second smallest country to reach the finals of the World Cup.
Fosinha’s brilliance led to a huge jump in his popularity as his Instagram followers went from 50,000 to 17.4 million.
Ortea, a professor emeritus at the University of Oviedo who received the Order of Merit from Cape Verde in 2023, is known for his passion for marine biology and soccer and has previously named players after creatures he discovered, including Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
