Microsoft has announced others changes that have been expected for a long time to his own Surface Laptop and Surface Pro devicesboth are refreshed with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 chips. Known as the Surface Laptop 8th Edition and Surface Pro 12th Edition, these new devices replace my Windows products of the past few years, and provide an indication of how the decline in the segment has affected pricing.
The updated content is based on this new information Qualcomm chips, has been slowly spreading to various products Windows laptops in the first half of this year. Microsoft claims the new chips offer “up to 53 percent faster display than the previous generation,” and 15.5 hours of battery life.
Despite the smaller chips I’ve tested (whether it’s the Snapdragon X2 Elite or the Snapdragon X2 Plus), the real issue here is the price hike itself.
The new Surface Laptop starts at $1,599, a $600 increase over the $999 starting price of the previous generation, known as Advanced Laptop 7th Edition when it was launched in 2024. The original price of $999 was officially raised a few months ago, to $1,499. Like the previous generation, the Surface Laptop 8th Edition still starts with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
We see other companies reacting to Apple’s decision on the MacBook Neo by going back to 8 GB, as new. Image of the XPS13. I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft follows suit A budget 13-inch laptop Later this year, but for now, the device still uses the Snapdragon X processor and is sold at $ 1,150.
The new Surface Pro pricing is tough to swallow. The machine also started at $999 last year, then went up to $1,199 in early 2026 when Microsoft discontinued the 256-GB model. The new base model costs $1,499, which does not include the price of a removable keyboard.
Microsoft isn’t alone in its price hikes this year. Other Windows laptops the latest silicon games from Intel or Qualcomm have been very expensive, while previous generation laptops have been a bargain. The prices of these new Surface devices reflect its power lack of shares continues to dominate the PC industry, while RAM and storage prices remain high.
That said, many of the things I love about the Premium Laptop are still in place, whether it’s the tall 3:2 aspect ratio display or the low-profile keyboard. The only other changes to Surface devices this year are some new models. There’s a new green option called Jade for the 13.8-inch Premium Laptop, while the Surface Pro now comes in a Dune gold color.
The new Surface Laptop is the Surface Pro they are all available starting today.
These new Surface devices follow Microsoft’s announcement earlier this month, the Surface Laptop Ultra. That is based on expectations Nvidia RTX Spark Chipwhich is coming out at the end of this year and will act as a proper alternative to the company’s MacBook Pro.
Update, Tuesday June 16 at 12:50 pm: Microsoft’s original website indicated that there was a 256-GB version of the Surface Laptop 8th Edition as a starting point. I have been informed that this was an error on Microsoft’s part. In the US, the update will start with 512 GB of storage at $1,599. The 256 GB will be a “global SKU” only and will not be available in the US. We have updated this article to reflect more.
