The high temperature worries the team’s doctors
An unprecedented heat wave is being imposed on the 2026 World Cup playoffs after temperatures soared to record highs across much of the eastern United States, raising concerns about the safety of players and fans.
The US National Weather Service has warned of extreme heat over the next few days, especially in World Cup host cities, where record temperatures are expected in the region as a result of a heat wave, given the effects of climate change, which has made such events more frequent.

Several matches are expected to be played in harsh weather conditions, with France vs Paraguay, Brazil vs Norway, Colombia vs Ghana, Argentina vs Cape Verde all set to be played in temperatures above 40 degrees.

It is expected that during the France-Paraguay match, the temperature will exceed 42 degrees, which caused great concern among the doctors accompanying the teams.
The city of Philadelphia is one of the hardest hit cities, with an extreme heat warning in effect until the evening of July 4, the day of the Roosters’ showdown with Paraguay.
Temperatures are expected to remain high even after sunset, with the National Weather Service warning that “very warm overnight lows, ranging from the mid-30s to around the early 40s, will not bring relief from the heat.”
Concerns aren’t limited to Philadelphia, as high temperatures are expected to affect the Kansas City and Miami games, and the wave could extend into Sunday when the Round of 16 game takes place in New Jersey.

FIFA procedures
For its part, the International Football Federation (FIFA) has confirmed that it has taken some measures to combat the heat wave, including providing an extra break for drinking water at each half and providing air conditioning for substitute players.
But FIFA did not say whether it would implement additional measures in the coming days, such as adding shaded areas, providing misting systems to cool fans or distributing free cold water.
Doctors warn that heat exhaustion can turn into heat stroke, a potentially life-threatening condition. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends drinking plenty of water and avoiding direct sunlight as much as possible.
For his part, climate scientist Daniel Vetzelio from the University of Nebraska at Omaha emphasized that the elderly and people suffering from chronic diseases, especially heart diseases, should think carefully before participating in games in open stadiums, explaining that high heat and humidity put additional pressure on the cardiovascular system, and the elderly have more difficulty regulating their body temperature.
