The mind of Iran. De Bruyne refuses to go against Garcia’s decision

The Belgian national team failed for the second time in a row in the final of the 2026 World Cup, playing a goalless draw with Iran.

Belgium, led by coach Rudy Garcia, opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-1 draw with Egypt.

Belgian Kevin De Bruyne did not hesitate to honestly evaluate the Iran match, knowing that Garcia decided to remove himself in the 87th minute in exchange for Matias Pardew’s entrance.

De Bruyne said in published statements DHnet website “We should have scored. We had a few chances, but at the beginning we tried to play too fast and hit the defensive wall.”

He continued. “We should have been more patient, there weren’t many spaces to find solutions, at times we found solutions on the left side.”

With one of Belgium’s players sent off and the squad down to 10 players, coach Rudi Garcia dropped Lukaku and brought on Arthur Thiet.

De Bruyne added: “We were in control when we were 11-on-11, but when we became 10-on-11, it wasn’t the right decision to press high. However, we created some chances even in those circumstances.”

He stressed that the tactical decision was logical given the numerical scarcity and that the team nevertheless continued to try to create chances without scoring success.
