For the former player of the German national team, Stefan Effenberg (57 years old), the exit of the German national team from the tournament is nothing more than a “complete disaster” and a “very bitter defeat”.
Effenberg also drew the attention of German football officials to the lessons learned from this loss and called for a radical change in the national team, including in the goalkeeper position.
Quotes Bild newspaper What Effenberg wrote in his column on the T-Online news site, where he said that it is necessary to make changes in the position of goalkeeper, which has become vacant again after the retirement of Manuel Neuer (40 years old), which the goalkeeper announced shortly after the loss to Paraguay in the 32nd round of the World Cup on Monday night.
Effenberg said: “Manuel Neuer’s page in the German Football Association must now be closed for good, but the return of Oliver Baumann does not seem logical in the long term,” ruling out Hoffenheim goalkeeper Baumann as his successor.
Baumann was Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper in 2024 after Neuer’s first career finish, before losing his place just before the World Cup.
But instead of Baumann, Effenberg has another successor as Germany’s goalkeeper, Neuer’s Bayern Munich teammate Jonas Orbig (22).
Effenberg said clearly. “Jonas Orbig should be Germany’s starting goalkeeper in the next international match.”
Orbig made 20 appearances in all competitions for Bayern Munich last season as a back-up goalkeeper and will gradually be introduced as Bayern Munich’s starting goalkeeper next season under Neuer.
A radical coup.
But Effenberg’s call to renew the squad isn’t limited to the rest of the players, as he said, “Eight players from the World Cup squad were 30 or older, and four more will turn 30 this year. “Perhaps now is the time to focus more on the young players” so that the German national team shines again.
Apart from Neuer and Baumann, there are players over 30 in the current squad, such as Jonathan Tah (30 years old), Antonio Rudiger (33 years old), Joshua Kimmich (31 years old), Leon Goretzka (31 years old), Pascal Grosz (35 years old) and Leroy Sane (30 years old).
Among the young players Effenberg expects to make a difference in the future is Lennart Karl (18), who he believes will become a key player on the right wing.
According to Effenberg, Karl is expected to form an attacking identity alongside Saeed Al-Mulla (19), Florian Wirtz (23) and Jamal Musiala (23).
The Bayern Munich legend believes Malik Thiau (24), Nico Schlotterbeck (26) and Nathaniel Brown (23) are also important pillars in the defensive unit.
