What happened?
Japan scored a dramatic unanswered goal against Iceland in a friendly to prepare for the finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, the result was not the highlight of the match, but rather the first historical application of the strict time-wasting rule.
The new rule stipulates that a substituted player must leave the field within 10 seconds of the fourth official’s shirt number being raised, or his team will be penalized with a game-ending numerical penalty, and the substitute will not be allowed to enter, except at the nearest stand, to play after at least one full minute.
In the 84th minute, the Icelandic player Kristian Helinsson left the field late, so the referee immediately applied the rule and did not allow his replacement Isak Torvaldsson to leave the field.
The result then showed a goalless draw, but Japan made brilliant use of the temporary numerical advantage and Koki Ogawa scored the winning goal with a perfect header in the 87th minute.
This rule is expected to be closely monitored and evaluated during the 2026 World Cup as it aims to speed up the pace of play and protect match times from tampering.
It is noteworthy that the Japanese national team is in a strong group in the World Championship, which includes Tunisia, Holland and Sweden, and the Icelandic national team could not secure its place in the qualifying tournaments.
