The latest versions of Windows developed by Microsoft include Linux heavily

Microsoft is kicking off its Build developer conference today with a promise to make Windows a more reliable development platform. As the company continues to focus on performance and reliability Windows 11 updateit is also creating an optimized software experience that keeps many useful tools and software and embraces Linux even further.

“We’ve enhanced the Windows 11 experience for developers, bringing frequently used command line tools, a familiar shell, quick setup information, a way to create and connect to Linux devices on Windows and the new Intelligent Terminal for testing,” he explains Windows CEO Pavan Davuluri.

Microsoft has made it Coreutils for Windows from resources open source projectan intermediate revision of GNU coreutils in Rust. “These are Linux-like command-line tools that run natively on Windows,” says Davuluri. “Whether you’re moving between Linux, macOS, WSL, containers, or cloud environments, the rules and workflows you’ve developed over the years work in your Windows environment.”

After booting the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) at Build last yearMicrosoft is now integrating WSL further into Windows with its new WSL tools. As the name suggests, WSL containers are a way to create, run, and interact with Linux containers on Windows. Microsoft has developed a command-line interface and API for WSL containers, allowing developers to run Linux containers inside Windows applications. WSL containers will be available for public viewing in the coming months.

Microsoft is building on the success of the existing Windows Terminal with a new Intelligent Terminal test for developers. “Intelligent Terminal provides information to your favorite agents via ACP (Agent Communication Protocol) so you can stay connected and ask questions, fix errors or complete any task you have,” Davuluri explains. “It’s based on what’s available on the Windows Terminal, so you get everything it offers (tabs, profiles, headers, settings, shells) including a CLI assistant on the operator panel.”

Software-friendly Windows updates also include the availability of Windows Developer Configurations, a quick way to set up new systems with software-optimized updates. Microsoft has been experiment with this idea for a few years now, and Updates will install tools like WSL, PowerShell 7, and Visual Studio code, and will also enable Git version control in File Explorer and show hidden files.
