A player’s desire tips the balance of negotiations
Inter Milan continue to work to strengthen their ranks in the summer transfer window, with defensive reinforcements among their top priorities as the Italian league champions look to add experienced and quality players ahead of the start of the new season, while links with one of the Premier League’s most popular defenders accelerate.
Italian outlet Sports Mediaset has revealed that Inter have stepped up their talks with Tottenham to sign Argentine defender Cristian Romero, who has agreed to return to the Italian league five years after leaving Atalanta.
According to the report, Romero, who is 28 years old, believes that a move to Inter is the ideal step in his career after reaching the final of the 2026 World Cup.
He added that the management of “Inter” is going to make the first official offer, which includes a mandatory purchase loan for the player, with a total deal of 40 million euros.
It is expected that the sporting director of the Italian club, Piero Ausilio, will hold a new round of negotiations with the leaders of “Tottenham” in the coming days, in order to reach a final agreement.
Tottenham initially demanded 50 million euros to leave the captain, but Romero’s apparent desire to join Inter gave the Italian club the upper hand in negotiations.
It comes as Tottenham reshuffled their defensive options this summer after signing Jan-Paul van Heke and Marcus Senesi, giving them more flexibility when considering offers for Romero.
The report confirmed that an agreement with the player would not be an obstacle after positive talks with his representatives, while the two clubs continue to work to finalize the deal before the transfer window closes.
