Last year’s BBC study on New Year 2025 revealed that the North of England has 23% of the UK population but only 6% of the top prize winners, and the effort to be more representative is based on geographical distribution.
The latest evidence, based on 2026 birthdays, shows that the figure for top prizes in the north of England has more than doubled to 13 per cent.
But it is still underpopulated – and Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and most regions of England are under-represented.
This is due to the dominance of London and the South East of England, with 56% taking the top honors in these latest awards, compared to 27% of the UK population.
Lawrence said his appointment to the committee helped him not being from the capital or the Southeast.

There has been a push to widen the pool of candidates. This includes using different networks to contact people, such as social media and LinkedIn, rather than the contacts of the Lord Lieutenants, the King’s local representatives.
