The Home Secretary has vowed to “right the wrongs” revealed by an inquiry into the “justifiable homicide” of three teenage girls in Southport and violent attacks on others.
Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice da Silva Aguirre, nine, were killed by 17-year-old Axel Rudakubana at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in June 2024.
The inquiry’s chairman, Sir Adrian Fulford, said there had been a “fundamental failure” by any organization to own up to the dangers posed by Rudakubana in the years before the attack.
Shabana Mahmood said the government accepted these findings and said, “We will do everything necessary to protect the people.”
“The Southport inquiry has identified fundamental failings in many of our public services in the years to July 2024,” she said.
“These terrible failures have led to the senseless killing of three young girls and violent attacks on others.
My thoughts today are first with all the families and friends of Bebe, Elsie and Alice and all the victims of that terrible day.
“We must correct these wrongs.”
She added that her department would now carry out the necessary work “with due urgency”.
