Halifax was founded in West Yorkshire in 1853, issuing its first mortgage that year, before going on to become one of the UK’s largest building societies.
Calderdale Council’s reform leader Dan Sutherland said he was “disappointed” that Lloyds Banking Group had decided to end the use of the Halifax brand.
“We know the Halifax brand is important to many generations of local people who care about the city’s heritage and are proud of our local cultures, family history and the brand’s profile around the world of Halifax,” he said.
“As Calderdale’s largest employer, the banking group’s relationship with Halifax as a place is strong and enduring.
“We are confident that Lloyds has made clear that the business is fully committed to the city, having recently invested £116m in a major refurbishment of its iconic headquarters building on Trinity Road to make it fit for the future.”
Calderdale Labor Group said the bank was “part of our town’s identity and heritage”.
In a statement issued by the group: “Since the time of birth, the local people have been proud of the name and the things it represents.”
“While we welcome his commitment to opening branches and protecting customer accounts, many residents will be saddened to see such a well-known name disappear from our high streets.”
