Last year, when I watched the Google I/O keynote, I wrote that it made sense The future of Google was Google googling. After watching this year’s I/O keynote on Tuesday, I don’t think Google just wants to google you — I think it wants to. everything for you, all from the search box.
Take a trusted one Google search bar onlysomething Google often hesitates to change, which is receiving other changes. It will “grow” as you write longer queries. It will offer “AI-driven suggestions” that Google says will “go beyond completion,” which will prompt you to fill in information you didn’t want in a way you didn’t want but may or may not be useful.
Or what Google really is are displayed in the search results? From AI Overviews you can continue querying in AI Mode, which creates a custom page with an AI-generated summary of what you’re searching for instead of displaying a traditional list of links. Search results will also be more personalized because Google will be able to create a custom UI for you, including creating things like visuals and graphs within your search page. You can also ask Google, from a search engine, to create “information assistants” that can track what you care about – such as new shoes or home listings – creating an AI-infused search engine like Google Alert.
Gemini is getting a lot of updates and features, too. It can send you a “Daily Brief” that tells you about your day based on what you write on Google, such as Gmail and Google Calendar. You can create your own Google-powered devices because of the interface it is called Gemini Sparkwhich may have a leg up on providers like OpenClaw because it’s the first offering from Google. The company has also created a kerfuffle recently of Personal Intelligencethat comes from other Google apps that help you get your answers from Gemini.
In Workspace, Google wants you to just blab on tools like Gmail and Docs and Keep, and these apps will help you with things like organizing your inbox, writing a document, or creating to-do lists. Shopping, new Universal Cart it will save the content you want to buy in apps like Search, Gemini, Gmail, and YouTube – and let you view it using Google’s payment options. And speaking of YouTube, company and testing the AI Mode experience there, too, where it will load a results page instead of just showing you a list of things to watch.
There’s more – it’s new Gemini Omni Pictures, you will be able to create a video using things such as other videos, other images, and audio as a prompt. Down the line, you will be able to create more media; a family of models meant to be able to “create anything.”
I could go on; there were many announcements at I/O. But what I’m trying to get at here is that Google doesn’t just show you where the information is. Through various search boxes, it is only answering questions in the way it thinks is most useful. In a more sympathetic view: If done well and correctly, both he can be very useful. But this means that it must be done well and correctly, and that’s it bar too high to clearespecially with complex search queries or queries about sensitive data like the emails I’ve had for years in Gmail.
It’s not hard to imagine a future where, one day, Google just makes everything happen in one search box. No more jumping between Google Search, YouTube, Gmail, Gemini – my gut is that the end of Google is that you just type whatever you’re looking for in the Ask Google box, and Google finds a way to make this happen and tell you your preferences.
Just thinking that’s the case, I don’t want to. The fun of the Internet does the job of finding things, even if it can be frustrating, difficult, or time-consuming at times. Sure, talking to Gmail to get help finding things in my inbox seems like a handy thing, but I’ve also spent years respecting my email management system – which would work whether I used Gmail or not. It’s also very functional meI think we should all try to find patterns throughout our digital lives that work best for us instead of relying on Google to find everything from the global search box.
Google doing everything also means that much of the internet that Google relies on falls under it. If Google Search isn’t sending the volume of publishers or websites that need visitors to make money – which is already happening quickly, Thanks Google Zero! -What will Search learn, and where will it direct people? If YouTube’s AI Mode prevents people from browsing videos, how can creators who lose their audience help themselves to make more videos? Google probably doesn’t care – it seems they just want a search engine that can do it all, no matter the cost.
