The first trailer for Aaron Sorkin’s highly anticipated sequel to The Social Network has arrived.
The Social Reckoning has been described as a film that is not “straightforward” but will also focus on Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook.
This drama is from the Wall Street Journal Facebook files which examined the damage caused by social media and how the information found inside was buried.
Zuckerberg will be played by Succession star Jeremy Strong who was also nominated for an Oscar for his work in The Apprentice. “This is one of the best articles I have ever read,” Strong said last year. “It speaks to our time, it touches the third rail of everything that is happening in the world.”
In the trailer, her character prepares to testify before Congress after whistleblower Frances Haugen reveals secrets to reporter Jeff Horwitz. “I haven’t spent two years in a bedroom anymore,” he says, while also describing himself as a “free speech absolutist”.
The character was previously played by Jesse Eisenberg who received an Oscar nomination for his performance. When Strong was asked if he had spoken to Eisenberg, he said “it has nothing to do with what I’m going to do”.
Haugen will be played by Mike Madison who won a best actor Oscar for her performance in Sean Baker’s Anora. “I don’t want to be an example of a person with unlimited wealth,” the character says in the trailer.
Horwitz will be played by Bear star Jeremy Allen White and the rest were filled by the Sinner Oscar chosen by Wunmi Mosaku, Bill Burr and Betty Gilpin.
“It’s a real David and Goliath story,” Sorkin said of the film.
Sorkin will serve as writer and director. Her last film was the Nicole Kidman directed Lucille Ball biopic Being the Ricardos.
The Social Network was a hit and commercial in 2010, making $224m worldwide and winning three Oscars, including best screenplay for Sorkin.
The Social Reckoning will be released on October 9th and will premiere at the fall festival.
