Microsoft has announced a bunch of new in-house AI models at Build 2026, including a new “flagship” model: MAI-Thinking-1. It is a part of the development of Microsoft, which launched its first internal models last year – before that, it relied on OpenAI versions. The two companies soon they also discussed their partnership loosening ties.

According to at MicrosoftMAI-Thinking-1 is an “intermediate model” that “matches leading models” on “key” software engineering benchmarks. Microsoft says that the company “trained it from the bottom of pure data, without dilution from third-party models.”
