The first person received a new experimental vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola

Professor Theresa Lamb, who led the Ebola vaccine team at the University of Oxford, said the rapid development of the disease was thanks to decades of research.

She explained how they can make sure the vaccine is effective in protecting people. Ebola cannot be given to anyone.

“We will not give Ebola to anyone in this experiment or any experiment.

“The aim of the phase one clinical study is to find out the safety of the vaccine and also to see if we are getting a strong immune response that can protect against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola.”

There have been four vaccines against the Bundibugyo strain that sparked the outbreak, but this is the first in human trials.

There is a licensed vaccine against the Zaire strain of Ebola, but it does not work against Bundibugyo.

The Oxford team says a second small-scale Ebola vaccine trial will soon begin in Uganda, followed by a larger study in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Serum Institute in India has already made 600,000 Oxford Ebola vaccines, ready for use if the trials are successful.

There have been more than 2,500 cases of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo so far; Among them, more than 1,000 people died.
