The fifth penalty brings back sad memories for Tuchel against Croatia

The German coach criticized the referee 3 years ago

France’s Clement Turpin has been appointed as England’s head referee for next Wednesday’s World Cup opener against Croatia in the first round of the group stage.

Tuchel has fond memories of Turpin and has previously described him as a fifth-rate referee, according to the BBC.

In April 2023, then-Bayern Munich coach Tuchel was shown two yellow cards by a French referee in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final between the German club and Manchester City, which led to his removal from the stands.

Turpin showed five yellow cards in the first half at the Allianz Arena and a straight red to Bayern defender Dayot Upamekano for a challenge on Erling Holland, but the video assistant referee (VAR) overturned the offside decision.

Bayern’s 4-1 aggregate defeat led Tuchel to criticize Turpin after the game, saying: “There were two things they failed to follow: the pitch was not in good condition and also, unfortunately, the referee was fifth-rate.”

He added: “I rate him 1 out of 10. It was very bad, unbelievable at this level.”

Despite his feud with Tuchel, Turpin is regarded as one of the best referees in Europe, officiating the 2021 Europa League final and the 2022 Champions League final.

Turpin was also selected to officiate UEFA Euro 2024 matches, where he officiated the England-Slovenia match, which ended in a goalless draw.
