The FDA Has Ruled That ZYN Pouches Are Safer Than Cigarettes. That Doesn’t Mean They Are Safe

On June 30, The US Food and Drug Administration authorized 20 ZYN nicotine bag drugs to carry “adjusted risk”. This means that in the US, ZYN can now claim that “using ZYN instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of oral cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.”

This decision does not mean that nicotine patches are safe or acceptable as a smoking cessation drug. It only allows Swedish Match, which manufactures ZYN, to market the product as an alternative to harm for adults who are quitting smoking.

The regulatory green light comes at a time when the influence of nicotine has already changed the discussion about other ways to quit smoking. Nicotine bags have become one of the most popular groups in the world, due to their subtlety, lack of smoke or vapor, and the growing perception that they represent pure “nicotine”.

According to a recent report and the World Health Organization, global sales of nicotine patches will reach 23.4 billion units in 2024, an increase of 50 percent from the previous year, confirming the growth of the sector.

The FDA announcement comes as WHO he warns that Nicotine bags are spreading so fast that laws are struggling to be enforced in many countries, and that businesses are increasingly using social media, influencers, and youth marketing to promote them.

This is the first time that the authorities have accepted a decision that many young people who use nicotine have already accepted. It is not, however, a blessing for the group. In many ways, regulators are simply taking over the cultural changes that have already taken place.

Nicotine and Tobacco Alternatives to Cigarettes

The market for smoking alternatives is more fragmented than it was a decade ago. When instead of nicotine products such as patches, gum, and inhalers remain FDA-approved tools designed to help people quit smoking, now competing with a rapidly growing ecosystem of other nicotine products.

We have bags when we drink nicotine quickly become one of the largest growth groups. ZYN and other brands like On! and VELO will be leaders in the oral nicotine market all around the world.

Vapes and disposable e-cigarettes, meanwhile, account for the largest share of the global tobacco market, expected to sell $ 14.8 billion by 2030 in the US, although there are still topics related to the use of young people. Smoked tobacco devices, such as IQOS, offer an alternative to burning tobacco instead of burning it, which reduces exposure to many of the harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke.

New FDA Rule on ZYN Nicotine Pouches

State health officials remain wary of nicotine patches. The WHO has warned that they are gaining popularity among teenagers and young adults because of their “strong influence among young people and those with alcohol problems,” worrying that products originally marketed to smokers may also attract new people.

Based on toxicology data, consumer research, and public health practices, however, the FDA issued a Hazardous Waste Products (MRTP) to order 10 flavors of ZYN at two total strengths—3 milligrams and 6 milligrams. This allows Swedish sports selling the actual product as a risk reduction strategy for adults who want to quit smoking.

The new designation is a big win for the tobacco industry, but there are two important caveats.

First, the ruling only applies to 20 products, not all nicotine packs. Second, the FDA’s findings only apply to smokers who switch to these packs.

Those who use cigarettes or vapes as well as bags will not receive the same benefits, and The FDA has advised non-smokers to prevent the use of nicotine patches. “FDA’s review of the proposed changes is to ensure that older consumers have clear, science-based information about the harms of tobacco, so they can make informed choices,” said Bret Koplow, executive director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products. He added that the decision “informs adults who smoke about the low risk associated with this drug.” Swedish matches must also follow the international trend and return to the FDA. The MRTP Act is valid for five years, unless amended or repealed.

The FDA’s message is clear: Adults who smoke and switch to other nicotine patches reduce their health risks compared to continuing to smoke.

But the organization also emphasizes that there is no such thing as safe tobacco and that quitting tobacco and nicotine is the best way to achieve good health. Who ends up using nicotine patches – and whether their rapid growth creates a new generation of nicotine users – is a different question entirely.
