Ecuador’s president Daniel Noboa made the exceptional decision to declare Friday an official holiday in the country to celebrate the national team’s qualification for the 32nd World Cup finals.
The Ecuadorian national team managed to upset the German team with a thrilling 2-1 victory at the end of the group stage on Thursday night.
Although Germany took the lead through an early goal from Leroy Sane, Ecuador responded with two goals from Nelson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata.
The Ecuador team took the third place in the ranking table of group E with 4 points, and the German team lost 6 points in the leading position.
Noboa wrote through his official account on the “X” website. “Thank you to the players and the coach who, despite the criticisms, insults and difficult times they have gone through, were able to rise again and give this great joy to the whole country… Tomorrow is a celebration and long live Ecuador.”
Ecuador’s national team began their World Cup campaign with a fateful loss to Ivory Coast with an unanswered goal before being held to a goalless draw by Curaçao before their thrilling comeback against Germany.
