You may remember Muneeb and Sohaib Akhter, 34-year-old twin brothers history earlier this week. Although they had the technical skills to carry out years of petty crimes (like stealing airline miles), what got them into big trouble was the hacking of 96 US government databases in an hour both of which were executed last year by the same IT contractor, Opexus. (Opexus had just learned that both brothers were in prison for Internet fraud.)
These two come across less as cybercriminals than they do jumping galoots-that is to say, oafs who think asking an AI how to block their tracks will get them out of federal prison.
One of the little secrets I came across while writing the piece was that the government had every word of everything the brothers were talking to each other during the one hour break. The two men lived together in Arlington, Virginia, so it only made sense for them to hang out in the same room rather than texting each other right away. But how did the government get the audios? Supersecret software bugging? Crazy corporate spyware running on their company laptops? FBI agent in the bush with a microphone?
