The European Union has begun to delay the release of satellite images showing shipping routes near the Strait of Hormuz by 24 hours. This move comes in response to a previous request by the US government and is in line with the Trump administration that is starting a war with Iran again.
An unusual change to the free and open principles of the European Copernicus Earth observation program was revealed by Space Newswhich reviewed a copy of the decision made by the Council of the EU on July 13. The mandated delay applies to images taken by Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellites and covers the region of the Gulf of Oman which includes the passage to and from the disputed Strait of Hormuz.
The US government first asked the European Union to block Copernicus satellite images on May 26, according to a decision seen by Space News. That request was made at a time of turmoil time to stop fighting which began on April 8 and ended on July 8, when US troops resumed deployment a campaign of war following President Donald Trump’s announcement.
