Police investigators said the driver lost control of the vehicle in Chekwatit village in Kapchorwa district, overturning the bus and hitting a large rock.
Six of the people who died have not been identified, and the principal who was killed in the accident is believed to be the founder of the school and its principal.
Many children were rushed to hospitals while 23 of the injured are receiving help at Kapchorwa General Hospital. Three other vehicles on the same trip returned safely, police said.
Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports on Friday ordered a nationwide suspension of school trips to allow for a “thorough investigation into the recent incidents involving school children”.
The police also announced that “they will provide escorts to ensure that students return home to their schools”.
Uganda has one of the worst road safety records in the world, with road accidents often attributed to poor driving and speeding.
Earlier this month, 14 people died when a bus and a truck collided in northern Uganda. In October, at least 46 people were killed when two buses collided on the highway.
