The data center drank 30 million liters of water and nobody saw it for months

In a a letter in Congress last month, more than 120 organizations that advocate for the acceleration of data centers warned lawmakers that it is not enough to focus on legislation about rising energy costs.

“Water use is dangerous,” among other problems, the groups said.

“In areas where you are living in drought,” the groups explained, the data center that consumes 5 million gallons a day is struggling with “drinking water, agriculture, and natural resources.” Currently, closed systems “require the use of toxic chemicals that, if not disposed of properly, can eventually travel and contaminate waterways.”

In order to prevent the negative effects of water in the country, the groups recommended that Congress pass laws requiring a thorough environmental review before construction. They also want Congress to commit to vetoing “any legislation that would facilitate the approval and development of hyperscale, artificial intelligence, and other virtual environments” at the end of this legislative session.

Some efforts to protect water have been successful, as private debt payments that allow information to be processed without public knowledge are on the rise.

In Utah, one data center in Box Elder County withdrew a request to transfer 1,900 acre feet of water from a farm to their facility. About 4,000 people paid about $15 each to write notices of opposition to stop the request, Salt Lake Tribune. report. But even though the war was won, people hope that this great war is not over yet.

As the fight against data centers rages on in Utah, the Salt Lake Tribune’s editorial team published a report op-edwarning that government officials can lose trust the more they ignore residents’ concerns about things like water, electricity bills, clean air, and quality of life.

“Even if the museum is not as dangerous as feared – or if it is not built at all – the smell of fast-moving politics and privacy will take a long time to dissipate,” wrote the newspaper. “If possible.”
