Argentina’s qualification to the finals of the 2026 World Cup was not just a passage to another title game, but rather a historic achievement, equaling the tango of one of Brazil’s legendary records.

Argentina retained their place at the World Cup finals for the second time in a row after being crowned at the 2022 tournament, confirming their dominance was no fluke.

Football statistics network Squaka has revealed that Argentina have become the sixth team in men’s World Cup history to reach the final immediately after winning the title, equaling Brazil’s record for the most twice.

The list of teams that achieved this elusive equation was as follows, starting with Italy, who won the title in 1934, then again in 1938, and then came Brazil, who won the title in 1958 and won again in 1962, before the Seleção repeated the feat after winning the title in 1994 and then losing in the final in 1999.

The French national team made the list because they won the title in 2018 and then lost in the final in 2022. Argentina repeated Brazil’s feat after winning the title in 1986 and then losing in the final in 1990. The issue resumed when he won the title in 2022 and then reached the final in 2026.

The tally sees Argentina level with Brazil as the only two teams to reach back-to-back finals on two different occasions, further confirmation that Messi’s current generation have entered senior history through the widest possible doors.

However, Lionel Scaloni’s team faces the fate of Brazil. After winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, it faces a collapse in Samba, reaching its second final.

Argentina will face their Spanish counterparts in the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals next Sunday after Tango got past England and La Roja came through against France.
