The court has banned the wife of the Spanish Prime Minister from leaving the country because of corruption Corruption Issues

Begona Gomez is accused of using her position as the Prime Minister’s wife to obtain employment contracts.

The wife of the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has banned him from traveling to other countries as he prepares to stand trial on corruption charges.

Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado handed down the sentence on Saturday, ordering Sanchez’s wife, Begona Gomez, to surrender her passport and appear before the court twice a month until a verdict is handed down. He is accused of theft, fraud, business corruption and misappropriation of funds.

Gomez has denied any wrongdoing in the case, which stems from a complaint filed by an anti-corruption group with long-distance friends. It focuses on the creation and management of the chair at Madrid’s Complutense University which was run by Gomez, and on the use of human resources and public relations to advance their interests.

Sanchez has rejected accusations that his wife is trying to undermine his government. Sanchez’s Socialist Party says Gomez is innocent and the subject of a years-long campaign of political harassment.

No date has been set for the case to explode politically.

This case is one of many corruption investigations including those associated with Sanchez who are approaching trial or before the courts, increasing the pressure on the Prime Minister.

Several allies, including the number three of the Socialist Party and former transport minister Sanchez, are being investigated for crimes related to public services, oil and gas contracts, and the purchase of masks during the pandemic. He denies wrongdoing.

Separately, the Spanish Supreme Court held that this was the case is investigating former Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in that case he led a group that benefited by lobbying government officials on behalf of other people, including the Plus Ultra airline. He denies the allegations.

Sanchez, who has not been named in any of the charges, said he rejected calls to protest to resign and call for early elections.
