Garcia highlighted Lukaku’s role in getting Belgium back into the game
Belgium coach Rudy Garcia believes belief in his team’s abilities was the main reason behind their comeback against Senegal to claim a decisive 3-2 victory in the final minutes of extra time in the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 at the Seattle Stadium in the US on Wednesday night.
Garcia said in press statements after the game, the newspaper reported “L’Equipe” French. “Everything is always possible in football as long as you believe in it. The strength of this group is also in the players coming off the bench.”
“You cannot achieve a result with only 11 players. Midway through the second half we made a good adjustment. We were losing a lot of balls, we fixed it and the situation was fixed even if we conceded a second goal. We know these teams, they lose their tactical structure at the end of the game.”

Garcia added. “We also knew that when the lead was 2-0 they would try to defend the result with everything, which I think is a big mistake. They reminded me that when we’re 2-0 up, we shouldn’t do it. Because when you concede a goal, like they conceded in 1-2, the character of the game changes completely.”
He continued. “We were able to equalize through Yuri (Tellemans). I’m happy for Romelu (Lukaku) who got us back on the pitch (scoring the first goal). It was very good to score in stoppage time, from a very clear penalty.
Senegal led by two until the 86th minute when Romelu Lukaku scored the first goal for the Red Devils, before Tillmans scored the second in the 89th minute before coming back to score the decisive third goal from the penalty spot in the 120th minute + 5.
