The Best Backpacking Water Filters of 2026

A favorite among hikers, backpackers, cyclists, and hikers, the Sawyer Squeeze filter is the gold standard in water filtration for anyone concerned about weight and overall compatibility. The Squeeze weighs only three ounces, has a filtration level of 0.1 microns (which removes E. coli, salmonella, giardia, cryptosporidium, and other contaminants), and claims to filter 100,000 gallons of water before needing a change. The Squeeze also connects to any 28-mm soda bottle (for example, your 20-ounce Coke bottle), which means you don’t have to worry about damaging the bottle, because the replacement can be easily found anywhere in the world.

You can buy the Sawyer Squeeze as a filter alone or as a kit with multiple water bladders and connecting hoses. The included bladders work well, but I usually skip them and filter into a Smart Water bottle. As the name suggests, Squeeze is meant to be squeezed, although it works well as a suction filter, in moderation.

After years of testing and tweaking, my setup for Sawyer Squeeze is 2L Cnoc VectoX water bladder ($25) for the black water, which connects directly to the Squeeze, and then two bottles of Smart Water for my clean water, which connects directly to the filter. For trips with irregular water sources, I bring some 2L HydraPak bladder ($27). This setup allows me to get two liters of clean drinking water in about four minutes if I squeeze, and about eight to eight minutes if I hang and let gravity do the work. The speed varies slightly depending on how clean the filter is, and these numbers are based on a freshly cleaned filter.

Cleaning is Sawyer’s downfall. To clean it properly, you need a back-loading syringe, which is very unfortunate. My experience has been that if you can find a good, clean water source without a ton of silt or debris, the Squeeze will easily go seven days without needing to be cleaned. For long trips, I carry a syringe. It is also important to note that there are a Sawyer Mini ($17) it’s light but compact. In my testing, the Mini’s weight savings are outweighed by the Squeeze’s faster acceleration, but if you’re at the box-cutting stage, the Mini is the better choice.
