The BBC’s Will Grant reports from Havana, hours after the United States indicted former Cuban leader Raul Castro on charges of plotting to kill American citizens and other crimes.
The indictment announced Wednesday charged Castro and five others with the 1996 downing of two planes belonging to the Cuban-American group Brothers to the Rescue. Four people were killed, including three Americans.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called the charges “a political move that has no legal basis.”
Castro, the brother of Cuban leader Fidel Castro, who is nearly 95 years old, remains the island’s most influential surviving “leader of the Cuban revolution.”
