The BBC has seen destroyed villages in Israeli-occupied southern Lebanon.

As part of an Order of Malta humanitarian convoy distributing aid to Christian villages isolated by the war, the BBC’s Southern Lebanon division was given rare access to the Israeli-held part.

The mission took place on Thursday, a day before a new ceasefire was announced in the conflict between Israel and the Shia Muslim militant group Hezbollah. The group saw the presence of the Israeli army but was not allowed to film much of the trip.

Israel has said it has no plans to withdraw its troops from Lebanon, saying its plan is to create a border security zone free of Hezbollah to protect its northern communities from the group’s rockets and drones.

In occupied areas, mainly Shia villages have been completely destroyed by Israeli airstrikes or demolitions. Human rights groups say some of what happened there amounted to the deliberate destruction of civilian infrastructure, which could amount to a war crime.

The BBC’s Middle East correspondent Hugo Bachega and video journalist Neha Sharma report from southern Lebanon.

Additional reporting by Samantha Granville and Angie Marad.
