Main German objections to arbitration
The first half of the match between Bayern Munich and its guest PSG in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final witnessed a big refereeing dispute.
Bayern Munich had many objections during the first half, and the reason was a two-handed ball that was disallowed by Portuguese referee Joao Pineiro.
Nuno Mendes, who received a yellow card, touched the ball with his hand, which the German team considered sufficient reason to remove him from the field.
However, the referee did not call a foul, but instead awarded a free kick for an earlier foul by Leimer.
Referee expert Ituralde Gonzalez explained to “AS” newspaper and “Cadena Ser” radio. “Yes, what the referee called was a foul before. There were doubts as to whether a second yellow card was appropriate as a caution is only given for serious tackles… and Laimer was heading up the pitch.”
A similar situation was repeated minutes later when… Joao Neves touched the ball with his hand in the penalty areaIt happened when his teammate Vitenia was kicking the ball away, and it hit the Portuguese’s hand.
All Bayern Munich players awarded a penalty, but the referee indicated that the game should continue.
According to Iturralde, he was right in his decision, explaining: “It’s not a handball because it was a departure from a partner.”
