The AI Kill Switch Act would allow Trump to issue orders to shut down faulty AI systems

A proposed law called the AI Kill Switch Act would allow US government officials to order the shutdown of AI systems “that could cause harm,” the bill’s sponsors said today.

If approved by Congress, the bill would allow the Trump administration and future administrations to decide when an AI company should restrict user access, restrict or disable specific capabilities, or shut down the entire AI system entirely. The bill would require AI developers to use technology that would allow them to move or shut down the system when ordered by the government.

The legislation would replace the Homeland Security Act of 2002 with the authority for the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to order the suspension or shutdown of AI systems. AI developers who refuse to lock down the system could face fines of up to $20 million per day if violations occur.
