Tender Review – Modern masculinity is stripped in a cast club drama | Theater

TThere are two types of people in the world – those who, given the opportunity to be part of the audience at a strip club performance, raise the bar, then there is me. The crowd went wild for Dave Harris’ Tenders – my neighbor rocked him on the playlist before – but it’s not about the smash hit. Instead, Harris explores modern masculinity: hard bodies, breathing hearts.

The Dancing Bears is a heel club in New Jersey. Two teenage boys and a non-dancing dad work their teddy-bear heads and neon-green humor for a dwindling group of middle school teachers and recovering divorcees. The monster-schlonged competitors are robbing their punters and then Geoff is terrified. Sit down!

B, the daughter of the group’s mysterious owner, is recruited to save them. Jessie Mei Li stared at the boys with no interest: “There are no men.” Armed with dubious healing techniques and a surprising hatred of compassion, he breaks them down to help Mike regain his magic.

A sequel to Harris Cords & Bones he also revealed identity as a thing: Blackness as entertainment in the US of A. In Tender, porn showbiz is an entry point for discussions about sex, entertainment, parenthood, what makes a man – the play is as full as a bag of go-boys, although Harris’s writing shakes the same arguments often.

Matthew Xia is the director of swagger and finesse. At the show, artist Ciarán Cunningham shines a bright pink glow, but we’re usually pretty good at it. Shelley Maxwell, as choreographer and intimate director, supports the actors: Dex Lee’s foghorn Geoff, Darren Bennett’s grizzly father and Kwami Odoom, who, despite his impressive strength on the tree, is surprised when B asks him if he really likes sex.

This place is low compared to adult entertainment: the job, said one of the Bears, is just to shoot your neck and see where the music takes you. But to satisfy your audience’s true desires, inject your own happy streams – that’s another unstoppable salami.
