An oil tanker sailing off the coast of Oman in the Strait of Hormuz has caught fire after being hit by a projectile, according to the United Kingdom military.
The attack earlier on Tuesday was the latest on a vessel that transits through the critical Gulf route, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows before the US-Israel war against Iran began in late February.

Iranian state media said the oil tanker was attacked after warnings were ignored, but Tehran did not specifically say it had been hit.
Tehran has repeatedly declared that the only legal route through the Strait of Hormuz is safe, and is suspected of attacking ships that have used another route near the coast of Oman.
UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the vessel was hit near Limah, Oman, en route. The vessel struck the ship’s port side as it attempted to sail south from the mainland to the Gulf of Oman, the UKMTO said.
Negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding the end of the war seem to have stalled until the burial of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the beginning of the US-Israel war in Iran on February 28.
Officials flew Khamenei’s body to a Shia seminary in Qom overnight, where mourners paid their respects on Tuesday.
