T20 World Cup: West Indies claim seven-run win over Scotland in thrilling encounter at Headingley | cricket news

West Indies beat Scotland by 7 runs and remain unbeaten in the Women’s T20 World Cup after a madcap match at Headingley.

Scotland needed 154 runs to win and were 132-5 with two overs remaining.

Then medium pacer Alia Alleyne came to West Indies’ rescue. He took three wickets including Darcy Carter for 59 in the 19th over. Scotland needed 17 runs off the last over and were all out for 146 off the last ball.

In Group 2, only the West Indies and England were on two wickets, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals.

Scotland kept West Indies at bay in both innings. Tight bowling and fielding reduced West Indies to 124-6 after 18 overs. But another veteran, Stephanie Taylor, who missed West Indies’ opening win against defending champions New Zealand, salvaged the batting effort.

His 19-ball unbeaten 47 boundaries of 34 took his side to a competitive total of 153-6. West Indies added 29 in the last two overs, Taylor’s 26 runs.

Catherine Fraser starred for Scotland with two wickets, including bowling Hayley Matthews, a leaping catch on the boundary and the run out of Shemaine Campbell for 36 runs.

Fraser and Carter then got Scotland off to a flying start in their chase. But the West Indies struggled to take four wickets from 13 balls in the eighth over and Scotland’s run rate fell below the required rate for the first time.

Carter injured his leg in the fourth over and was out for 19 runs. Struggling to score runs, he didn’t hit a boundary until the 18th over after the fifth over. Scotland went without a boundary for almost five overs.

But poor bowling and fielding kept Scotland in the game. It took Alleyn to provide relief.
