Danny White-Hodge lit up England’s opening night of the T20 World Cup with a stunning 105 not out as England beat Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.
Veteran White-Hodge, who gave birth to their first child three weeks ago, celebrated by swinging her husband in her arms after competing for three figures in 61 balls.
She put on 135 for the first wicket with Amy Jones and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt continued the onslaught with 46 not out from 22 when the England wicketkeeper fell to 53 from 38 balls.
He took England to 219-1 – the highest score in a Women’s T20 World Cup.
Sri Lanka didn’t help themselves, dropping Jones twice and Siver-Brunt once, as well as wides and no balls, and were bowled out for 132.
White-Hodge also produced an impressive all-round performance, dismissing Sri Lankan captain and key batsman Chamari Attapathun for four, while 21-year-old left-armer Freya Kemp took 4-21 to score 87 runs.
He gave England the perfect start on a sunny evening in Birmingham.
Ireland and Scotland enter on Saturday morning. England’s second match in Group 2 is against Ireland in Southampton on Tuesday.
