Rescue teams from seven countries are searching for survivors from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela eight days ago.
Emergency crews found security guard Hernan Gil under the rubble of a multi-storey car park in Catia la Mar on Saturday, but only managed to make visual contact with him in his final hours.
Despite being buried more than nine meters deep in a very unstable wreckage, rescuers say Gill, who is in his 40s, is “in good spirits” and cheering them on.
His wife described his life as a “miracle.” Nearly 2,300 people are confirmed dead in the June 24 earthquake in Venezuela, and tens of thousands are still missing.
Since Gill’s 100 hours ago, about 350 hunters have been working around the clock.
Groups from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal and the United States are trying to free him.
Parts of the access pipes they built to reach it have collapsed several times, highlighting the dangers the work poses to hunters and gills.
Overnight, the search teams were finally able to make visual contact with Gill.
In the footage, captured by a small camera inserted into the wreckage where Gil was trapped, Chilean firefighters can be heard asking Gil to turn his head toward the camera.
One of his eyes is bloodshot and he wears a face mask. Earlier, rescuers had cut a small hole through him to protect him from the dust and debris created by their efforts to free him.
The firefighter asked him to wear goggles to protect his eyes as rescuers continued to carefully dig through the rubble around him.
